On a difficulty scale, I think mastering a red lip is on par with applying false lashes and a winged liquid liner. That said, the pay off is worth it. A strong lip (in any bold colour!) is one of the easiest ways to update your beauty look. A statement lip requires (and looks best) with minimal make-up—a bit of mascara and a dab of blush. So how do you make the perfect pout error-proof? Here are my 3 favourite products.
The newbie
If every gloss you own is a nude or peachy pink, start with Givenchy LeMakeup Collection Gelle D’Interdit in Tempting Rouge, $29. The product starts sheer but you can build to a pretty scarlet flush with a few extra swipes.
The result: A glossy non-sticky finish.
Available at Sephora
The sophomore
Lip stains usually mean sandpaper-like lips—enter Giorgio Armani Beauty Lip Wax. The real difference is the product’s wax texture (it’s like a hybrid lipstick and lipstain)— great staying power and lots of velvety texture that doesn’t dry out the lips. The mirrored compact makes for easy on-the-go touch ups.
The result: A velvet-finish lip stain/lipstick
Available: Holt Renfrew
The veteran
Want your lipstick to last twice as long as you? You need this product. The doe-foot applicator of lets you create a precise shape. Once the colour is set, the opaque shade will not disappear until you remove it—with waterproof make-up remover. Our only caution would be to take your time when applying—the shade is not very forgiving if make a mistake. If you do, dab a Q-tip with remover. Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain, $12
The result: Totally matte full-coverage lipstick
Available: Sephora
